FAQS
What I would like to know is what are the characteristics of a healthy well-functioning colon?
Healthy babies, animals and adults not subjected to the "refinement" of civilization (i.e. aboriginal peoples) have bowel movements shortly after each meal. So, assuming there is sufficient fiber and water available to the colon, one characteristic is a bowel movement shortly after a meal is eaten. Once the urge to eliminate is honored by a trip to the toilet, the elimination should be easy and take no more than a few seconds. The stool will be long, large in diameter, light brown in color, without offensive odor and should float or sink down slowly. When the toilet is flushed, the stool immediately begins breaking apart by the action of water movement. As incredible as this may sound, it is true and commonly experienced in cultures where people live more naturally.
Will one colonic completely empty the colon?
Almost never, in fact some people do not release at all during their first colonic. Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted feces in our colon: a hardened, rubbery or dark sludge material. Substantial work must be done to remove it. Secondly, many people hold emotional trauma in the abdomen and therefore emotional release becomes part of each session. In essence it is very important to relax and become more aware of what is going on in your abdomen. As your body learns how to allow the cleansing experience, more material is released.
How will I know when the colon is empty?
It will probably never be completely empty as it's an organ in continuous use. As more of the old impacted material is released, you will actually feel the water enter higher regions of the colon without any sense of obstruction. The objective should not be an empty colon, but rather a well functioning colon.
How Many Colon Hydrotherapy Sessions Does One Need?
It takes more than one session to internally cleanse your system. After all, you have had the same colon since birth and it has taken years to get your body in the state it is in now. Most people benefit from a series of sessions. After your first session, the colon hydrotherapist will discuss and assist you with your personal internal cleansing program.
Most doctors recommend a series of 12 colonics over ten weeks or less. Two the first week, back to back, then repeated the second week, and one for the next eight weeks. The reason for this is the human body is exceptionally smart when we clean out the colon. The body starts pulling waste out of the tissue and putting them into the bloodstream. The waste heads for the liver then back to the colon. Therefore, the second session on the second day is necessary so that the digested waste is eliminated rather than reabsorbed. The same reason applies to the following two the second week. This slows detoxification to a gentler, tolerable rate. If preferred this process can be achieved at a quicker pace, i.e., two a week for 6 weeks. Of course, the number of colon hydrotherapy sessions desired will depend on the individual. Every person's goals will differ. Just as some people exercise on a daily or weekly basis to tone and tighten their outer body, some people follow an ongoing cleansing, toning and rebuilding regimen for the inner body. Colon hydrotherapy could be used as part of any regular maintenance program.
Is there any possibility of bacterial or viral contamination from prior use of the colon hydrotherapy machine?
No. Our colon hydrotherapy machines utilize pre-sterilized, disposable hoses and rectal tubes. These disposables are used only once during a single therapy session. The equipment is disinfected between clients. Properly administered, there is absolutely no danger of contamination.
With all this talk of bacteria, I wonder what effect colonic hydrotherapy has on our immune systems?
The removal of stagnant waste material and hardened, impacted toxic residue could rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. Recent European studies speculate that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines. This is much higher than previously thought and makes it logical to believe that this type of therapy could influence such immune deficiency diseases as M.S., cancer and AIDS. Colon Hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important adjunctive therapy in the overall health care of the client.
How long does a treatment take and do they hurt?
The procedure is about 45 minutes, but you should plan a total visit of one hour in duration. Overall, colonics are pain free, but few have experienced cramping during some sessions. Many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing.
Is there a special kind of water used for colonic hydrotherapy?
We use triple filtered water which passes through sediment filter, carbon filter and UV light which provides further sterilization and activation of the water. This kind of water is capable of absorbing and flushing more toxins out of the colon because of its drawing effect on solid particles, chemicals and other matter. Tap water is not used because it already has numerous chemicals and inorganic substances present.
Should I see my doctor before my first colon hydrotherapy session?
If you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy, you should consult a doctor. If you are diagnosed with diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, severe hemorrhoids, or rectal or intestinal tumors, you would not be a candidate for colon hydrotherapy treatments. Click here for a more detailed list of contraindications. Professionally administered colon hydrotherapy is safe if you are free of the above sited conditions. If you are unsure or have any questions about any contraindications, a medical examination prior to colon therapy is recommended.
Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colon hydrotherapy session have any effect on the treatment?
No, in fact it's usually a good time to receive a treatment, since your body is already cleansing. Your flow will not interfere with the success of the treatment.
What if I am unable to release during the first colonic?
Many people come in for the first time and expect the colonic to instantly release all waste from their large intestine or colon. When it doesn’t happen, some clients say, “Why should I come back if nothing came out the first time, I’m empty, it’s not really that effective.” When nothing comes out, it is a more difficult case. The ability or inability to release is one of the ways to assess a colonic session.
The first job is to get the gut muscles to respond by creating what we call a “flow through”. “Flow through” is the ability of the person to eliminate or have material flow through their alimentary tract from mouth to anus without restriction. Dehydration could be a reason for a difficult first cleanse. If a client states they drink one quart or less of fluid daily, we know that the colon is probably dehydrated. The lack of fluid allows hardening of waste in the gut. Dehydration may also affect the quality of intestinal muscle tissue and its ability to expand and contract properly.
Another cause is what we call the peanut butter effect. Some low fiber diets, and likely combined with insufficient fluids, can create a very sticky and thick elimination that gets stuck in the intestines. If this may be suspected, you can prepare before the first session by: drinking half your body weight of water in ounces daily, and making fruits and vegetables 50% of your diet. This is not necessary, but assists in the success of your first colonic.
